The New York State Police joined family, friends, and fellow members of the law-enforcement community to honor the life and service of Trooper Theodore C. Upson, who was laid to rest following a courageous battle with cancer.
Trooper Upson, affectionately known as Teddy, joined the New York State Police on June 26, 2023. At the time of his passing, he was assigned to Troop D, SP Herkimer, where he served with pride, dedication, and compassion.
Although his career with the Division of State Police was relatively brief, Teddy made an enduring impression on the people around him. He was remembered as a genuinely kind person who made friends easily and brought warmth, humor, and friendship wherever he went.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Teddy was deeply devoted to his family and cherished the time he spent with the people closest to him. Those who knew him remembered a man who embraced life and enjoyed adventure, particularly his time outdoors.
One of his passions was flying his beloved “Puddle Jumper,” an activity that reflected his adventurous personality and appreciation for the experiences life offered. Whether exploring outdoors, enjoying his hobbies, or simply spending time with family and friends, Teddy created memories that will remain with those who knew him.
His passing following a battle with cancer has left a profound sense of loss among his parents, loved ones, fellow Troopers, friends, and members of the wider law-enforcement community.
During the tribute to his life, the New York State Police emphasized the impact Teddy had during his time with the agency. His service was characterized not only by professionalism but also by the heart and humanity he brought to his relationships.
While his time with the State Police and with those who loved him was far too short, his legacy will continue through the memories shared by everyone whose life he touched.
The department extended its thoughts and prayers to Trooper Upson’s parents and all those grieving his death. For his fellow Troopers, losing a colleague is a deeply personal experience, particularly when that colleague was known for kindness and genuine friendship.
As family, friends, and fellow officers said their farewells, Teddy was remembered not simply for his uniform and service, but for the person behind it—a devoted son, loyal friend, adventurer, and compassionate man.
His memory will remain a lasting part of the New York State Police family.
Rest easy, Trooper Theodore C. Upson. Your service, friendship, laughter, and memory will never be forgotten.
